Learning to do nothing

Rest is a skill. Like any skill, it gets easier with practice and harder when you ignore it.

A calm sea at dusk with soft pink and blue reflections

For most of my twenties I treated rest as a reward. Something earned after the work was done. The work was never done, so the rest never came.

Small doses, every day

Now I try to do nothing on purpose for twenty minutes a day. No phone, no book. Just sitting near a window or on a bench by the water.

Doing nothing is not the opposite of doing something. It is where the next thing begins.

It felt strange for weeks. Now it is the part of the day I protect most.
