Walking without a destination

The best ideas I had this year arrived somewhere between the second and third hour of an aimless walk.

Mist rolling over a dark pine forest beneath a mountain

There is a particular kind of walk that has no purpose. No step count, no podcast, no errand at the end. Just a direction and a rough sense of when to turn back.

Boredom does the work

The first hour is restless. The mind keeps reaching for something to do. Somewhere in the second hour it gives up, and that is when the interesting thoughts start to surface.

How I keep it simple

  • Leave the headphones at home

  • Pick a direction, not a destination

  • Carry a pencil, just in case

I don’t always come back with an idea. I always come back calmer.
