Thirty-six frames

Shooting a roll of film taught me more about attention than any photography course ever did.

A roll of film gives you thirty-six chances. No preview, no delete button, no burst mode. You wait a week to see what you actually made.

Waiting changes the way you look

With a phone I photograph everything and look at nothing. With film, I walk around a scene twice before pressing the shutter. I notice where the light falls and when someone is about to turn their head.

Three rules I keep

  • Never shoot the same scene twice

  • Leave one frame for the walk home

  • Write down the date and the weather

When the scans come back, the bad photos are still useful. They show me what I was paying attention to, and what I missed.
